BS2: University of Vienna & University of Nîmes – Theory-U: Designing Innovation For Capacity Building In Health Care

Invited Session
Location: Room 14 Date: April 20, 2016 Time: 8:00 am - 9:00 am

Background:

The domain of healthcare has turned out to be one of the most complex socio-technological systems and challenges (besides e.g., educational systems) we are encountering in our times. Especially when it comes to changing or innovating such systems in a sustainable and thriving manner there are big controversies as to what should be the goals, the means, the stakeholders involved, the technologies used, the economic mechanics, etc. Due to the complexity of the domain, changing such systems requires rather sophisticated innovation technologies that go far beyond extrapolating successful patterns from the past into the future or beyond generating solutions, which are the result of a creativity processes only.

The goal of this session is to introduce an alternative innovation process that brings about such changes: Emergent Innovation or Theory-U.

Both the theoretical foundations and practical implication of this approach to innovation will be presented.

General objective:

We will introduce the concept of the Theroy-U and illustrate with an example the benefits for capacity building in health care.

Students having been trained on the basis of the Theroy U approach will testimony. We will  highlight the aspects that makes it especially appropriated for innovative sustainable solutions in developing countries and open the space for a discussion with the audience.

Specific topic addressed:

  • Theory U for Emergent Innovation
  • Sustainable Innovation in Health Care
