Background:

The EssentialTech program of EPFL’s Cooperation and Development Center aims to develop essential technologies that have the potential to reduce poverty. Its approach combines technology development with the elaboration of innovative business models for a sustainable and large-scale impact. In developing and emerging countries, the scarcity of infrastructure, financial resources, qualified personnel, together with extreme environmental conditions, create a challenging environment for technologies. Furthermore, in order to generate a significant and long-term impact on the ground, a comprehensive value chain has to be considered, and innovation is required at all levels of that chain. EssentialTech has developed a specific methodology to meet these particular needs and to take into account all the elements of this value chain
