CERAH – the Centre for Education and Research in Humanitarian Action– is the academic humanitarian platform in Geneva. The Centre benefits from unique access to Geneva's international and humanitarian institutions.

CERAH's modular framework of courses include a one-year Master of Advanced Studies in Humanitarian Action, a four-month Diploma of Advanced Studies, several Certificates of Advanced Studies, and a number of one-week short courses covering specific issues relevant to humanitarian practitioners. In addition, CERAH's Humanitarian Distance Learning programme offers modular, flexible and skills-oriented courses to professionals, in particular national staff from countries in crisis.

Amongst the courses are several that focus on health issues in humanitarian contexts. These include: a seven-week Certificate of Advanced Studies on Health of Populations Affected by Humanitarian Emergencies; and several one-week intensive Thematic Seminars dealing with nutritional crises, with sexual & reproductive health, with chronic diseases, and with sexual violence in conflict settings & emergencies.

CERAH offers researchers a platform to provide a critical assessment of humanitarian practice and improve interventions. CERAH's flagship research project, the Encyclopedia of Humanitarian Action, conceptualizes humanitarianism and the main terms used in the humanitarian sector, investigating the origins of key operational concepts, how they are understood across time and culture, and how they are operationalized by different stakeholders. Conceived as an interactive online platform, it will include a collection of collaborative interdisciplinary articles, alongside working papers, peer-reviewed disciplinary and interdisciplinary research papers.

CERAH is a Joint Centre of the University of Geneva and the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies.
